It is the nature of a super car to be driven at high speed. Often times owners take it to the circuit to enjoy its performance. In this extreme driving situation, a prime car condition is an absolute requirement. And all that can only be obtained from routine maintenance if you don’t want to sacrifice safety.
This was emphasized by Irwan Sugiharto (57), who works as a McLaren Jakarta Workshop Manager on a daily basis.
“Routine maintenance of the super car should not be taken lightly. Because when it is used the car will be pushed for its performance. Starting from the brakes, you must really pay attention to it, check the computer system, and also remember about tires,” he told Intersport.id .
If we talk about routine maintenance of a vehicle, of course, it will not be separated from the service schedule . Furthermore, Irwan said that every 10,000 km a super car, especially from the McLaren brand, must undergo maintenance at an official workshop .
But the problem is that the super car is relatively rarely used by its owner. So the possibility of not increasing the mileage much. So it is more relevant to use the count of time as a benchmark. In this case, the recommended service schedule is once a year.
” Maintenance is very important and the majority of super cars usually have an indicator that indicates how many days it will take to perform service . And our existing system is also monitored which cars have not performed annual service ,” said Firman.
So used or not, a super car still requires regular maintenance. Irwan said this had something to do with the weather climate in Indonesia which more or less affected the condition of certain parts of the car. “We have to look at the humidity of our weather. The viscosity of the oil can change, especially the brake fluid,” he continued.
Official Workshop Becomes Priority
Super car has a design that is more complex than cars in general. The engine capacity is clearly larger with an unusual configuration, for example the V8 or V6. Not to mention that there are many electronic and aerodynamic features that support it.
All of that, of course, requires special expertise for handling. Therefore, official workshops can be a priority choice for super car maintenance .
“Our routine maintenance has a standard. There is a multi-point check . So there are about eighty-two points that we have to check,” explained Irwan. Furthermore, he explained, in addition to checking the condition of the car based on the multi point check , McLaren also provides a list of what components must be replaced so that the car is always in top condition when a car is included in the maintenance schedule.
For each annual service schedule the list varies according to the component’s life expectancy. Things like this are actually commonly found in regular car maintenance in official workshops.
“So the term has a package. Starting from one year, two years, three years. We just have to see, everything has been prepared and everything has to be done,” said the man who has been familiar with the super car for nine years .
In more detail, Irwan explained, in the first and second years, there were actually not many components that had to be replaced. The definite replacement is for engine oil.
However, this is followed by replacing the gasket or drainage plug gasket which functions as the engine oil drain. Unlike ordinary cars, super cars usually have more than one drainage plug . In the McLaren super car, you can find four drainage plugs .
Engine oil changes are of course not only done in the first and second years. But it is also an item that must be done in the following years.
Still in the first and second year of maintenance, another work that has become standard is the replacement of filters. Call it oil filter and air filter.
Super Car Maintenance Costs
The most striking difference between super car maintenance and regular cars is the cost. It seems unfair to compare it because the super car is superior in many aspects.
However, if Men Intersport are curious, Irwan will give a leak about the range of super car service fees for the brands he is holding.
For treatment in the first and second years, it will cost around Rp. 16 million. These costs will increase in size in the following years as more components need to be replaced. For example, for treatment in the third to fifth years. The cost required can reach around IDR 30 million for one service .
“Entering the third year, there is usually a brake fluid replacement. Then the rubber wiper because it is hard right , so also must be replaced. If not, the risk can make the glass beret. Then there is also the replacement of the air filter in the third year, “said Irwan.
Well , one of the advantages of doing maintenance in an official workshop is that the owner does not need to be confused about finding the spare parts or parts needed. Although some types of spare parts must be ordered from abroad, so it takes time to get to the owner.
Care Tips For Owners
In order to maintain the condition of the vehicle, it certainly requires the owner’s awareness to take maintenance steps. The easiest way is to take it to an official workshop .
“For maintenance issues, I think it will be more optimal to do at the dealer. Because of what? Checking for super car problems cannot only be done visually. The car must be lifted, more checks are carried out below, “he explained.
One interesting thing that Irwan saw was that most super car owners , especially those outside Jakarta, now have a car parking lift in their private garage. That way the car can be lifted safely if at any time maintenance must be carried out by an incoming mechanic.
Apart from that, tips from Irwan for super car owners , one of which is to be aware of the possible decline in the quality of the fuel in the gas tank.
As is known, the super car is not a car that is used daily by the owner. If it is stored for too long, say up to three months, the gasoline will automatically be contaminated with other substances, for example water.
“For example, three months after the new car is used, then the engine check turns on. This could be due to water contamination of the fuel, ”explained Irwan.
Then for the interior, super cars often use special materials in their cabin. One thing to watch out for is the problem of humidity. Especially for interior panels that have a kind of rubber coating.
Without good air circulation, such material can be in a condition where it becomes a little sticky and creates a musty smell. For this problem the solution is quite easy. You can put a moisture-absorbing product or what is commonly called a dehumidifier .
“If it does glass window was also opened slightly to provide air circulation in the cabin,” he continued. But before deciding to do so, make sure the car is parked in a safe environment.
As for the exterior, in general, car owners often use body coatings on the outside of their vehicles. This treatment can indeed improve the appearance of the vehicle by making it more shiny.
But if the aim is to protect the car body from asphalt or gravel debris, then the type suggested by Irwan is a sticker coating .
